January 19, 2018 – Standing Up for Life
In honor of the 45th Annual March for Life taking place today in Washington, D.C., I am highlighting a regulation that Congress repealed earlier this year to further limit taxpayer-funded abortions. I am pleased to attend the March again this year and to stand in solidarity with millions of Americans to protect the most vulnerable among us.
What did this regulation do?
For years, the federal government has given grants to organizations that provide family planning and reproductive health services for uninsured or low-income individuals. In the last few days of 2016, President Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandated that states funnel these funds to organizations that provide abortions.
Why was this a problem?
Until 2016, states had some say in what organizations in their communities could receive these grants. Rather than indirectly fund abortions, some states stopped giving the grants to abortion-providing organizations.
Sadly, the Obama Administration wanted to ensure groups like Planned Parenthood could continue to receive as much federal funding as possible. HHS’s rule stripped states of their ability to choose pro-life organizations, once again leading to the degrading of human life.
What did we do about it?
Earlier this year, Congress passed a resolution to disapprove of and nullify HHS’ 2016 rule. President Trump signed the resolution into law on April 13, 2017.
I am grateful that Congress and President Trump recognized the importance of protecting the unborn from the gruesome practice of abortion and took action to overturn HHS’ blatantly political regulation. I will continue fighting in Congress to limit the practice of abortion and to prevent taxpayer dollars from directly or indirectly funding them.
What are they saying?
“As a member of the Catholic Church’s Respect Life Ministry and leader of Catholics In Action, I am pleased at the efforts of Congressman Biggs in the defense of life. Reversing the Obama rule stripping states of their right to provide Title X funds to pro-life groups is a great step toward the goal of protecting life at every stage. States should have the ability to provide these funds to the best interest of their citizens. On this day of our national March for Life, it is important to remember that our founders provided for certain unalienable rights given to us by our Creator, among them: LIFE. The pro-life community in Arizona is blessed to have such an ardent supporter of life representing us in Congress. Thank you Congressman Biggs.” – Ed Steele, Respect Life Ministry and Catholics In Action
“Last year’s reversal of President Obama’s unconstitutional HHS regulation was outstanding and allows Arizona the opportunity to become a more pro-life state. My family is very grateful for Congressman Biggs’ excellent pro-life leadership and strong stand for every single unborn child. His leadership and actions in the state legislature and over the this last year in Congress have modeled the principles of the families of our district.” – Christine Accurso, CD5 Pro-Life Advocate
