Congressman Andy Biggs Receives “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” for Voting Record on Fiscal Issues Scorecard

September 9, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Andy Biggs was honored by National Taxpayers Union (NTU) for having one of the strongest voting records in Washington, DC on supporting lower taxes, limited government, and economic freedom. This year, Congressman Biggs is one of only 17 Representatives to have earned the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award,” the top award in this category, for their outstanding voting record during the 2018 Congressional session.

“I’m grateful to be honored by the National Taxpayers Union with this award. When I entered Congress, I promised to fight for fiscally sound and smaller government policies. I have kept those promises. The United States is on a dangerous course, and Congress still refuses to take action to reduce spending and balance the budget, risking our nation’s sovereignty and security in the coming decades. We must take this national security threat seriously and make the tough decisions necessary for the sake of our grandchildren’s future. I will continue to advocate for fiscal responsibility throughout my tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives.” – Congressman Andy Biggs

NTU included 166 House votes in the 2018 scorecard. NTU’s rating program is designed to calculate a Member’s voting record on fiscal responsibility by evaluating every vote that has an impact on tax, spending, trade, and regulatory policy utilizing a methodical weighting system. This year, Congressman Biggs scored 77 percent on the group’s rating scale. In comparison, the House average was just 49 percent.

“During 2018, Taxpayers’ Friend Award winners were hard to come by in Congress,” said Pete Sepp, president of NTU. “Despite metrics that were poor for the 40-year history of our Award, taxpayers can take comfort that a principled elected official like Congressman Andy Biggs was working day in and day out to protect taxpayers’ interests in Washington. We all know actions speak louder than words, and this award is a testament to the often unsung efforts of lawmakers like Congressman Biggs who care so much about correcting our government’s precarious fiscal future. While those efforts aren't easy, we should all be so fortunate to have Congressman Biggs is a true champion for the people who pay government's bills.”

NTU has recognized Representatives and Senators since 1979 who annually earn high voting scores to qualify them for the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award.” See NTU’s full 2018 congressional scorecard and further analysis here.
