Congressman Biggs Reintroduces Resolution to Support States’ ‘Move Over’ Laws

May 10, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Andy Biggs reintroduced a resolution supporting state "move over" laws, which require drivers to shift lanes away from tow trucks, police, and emergency vehicles whenever it is safe to do so. While recognizing the risks to all individuals engaged in roadside duty, this resolution especially highlights the underreported dangers faced by the towing industry and expresses support for a "National Move Over Law Day," ideally to be held the third Saturday in October.

"In 2018, more than twenty tow operators lost their lives across the country while performing roadside assistance—a devastating statistic that does not always receive the attention it deserves. These deaths, along with those of police and emergency personnel, are an enormous tragedy. I am happy to see that all fifty states have passed move over laws, and I encourage them to continue educating drivers everywhere to look out for tow truck drivers, first responders, and other people assisting on the road." – Congressman Andy Biggs

"This resolution is a giant step for ‘move over' law awareness. The safety of tow operators and our incident management partners is of the highest priority to the Towing and Recovery Association of America. We thank Congressman Biggs for the introduction of this critical legislation and for his continued leadership on the issue."– Joanne Blyton, President, Towing and Recovery Association of America

"Representative Biggs has been and continues to be a leader on issues related to highway safety. ‘Move over' laws save the lives of all first responders, including towers, throughout the country."– Angela Barnett, Executive Director, Arizona Professional Towing and Recovery Association

"We appreciate Rep. Biggs highlighting an issue of road safety that too often goes unreported. This resolution is a timely reminder that we should all ‘move over' when we see tow trucks and emergency vehicles assisting motorists."– Glenn Hamer, President and CEO, Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry

"The Chandler Chamber of Commerce supports Congressman Biggs' ‘move over' legislation in an effort to save the lives of emergency responders. This common sense legislation will foster safer conditions on our roadways for those who come to the aid of drivers in distress."– Terri Kimble, President/CEO, Chandler Chamber of Commerce

"The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce supports road safety laws and encourages all to move over to protect our first responders and those stranded. Special thanks to Congressman Biggs for raising awareness to this important Arizona safety issue."– Kathy Tilque, President/CEO, Gilbert Chamber of Commerce

"‘Move over' laws save lives—the more we spread that message, the better for our communities. I commend Rep. Biggs for introducing this resolution, which honors the tireless efforts of those tow truck drivers, police officers, and emergency personnel who keep us moving and keep us safe." – Sally Harrison, President/CEO, Mesa Chamber of Commerce

"We believe ‘move over' laws are important for the safety of our first responders and Good Samaritans. Moving over is a small thing we can do to keep people safe and make sure everyone makes it home at the end of the day."– Chris Clark, President & CEO, Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce
