Congressman Biggs' Statement on Another Unfortunate National Debt Milestone

March 19, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last Thursday, the national debt reached $21 trillion. Congressman Biggs released the following statement:

"Six months ago, I released a statement to mark the national debt exceeding $20 trillion. Since then, Congress has not taken any action to reduce our deficit or balance our budget. Instead, last month, we busted our budget caps by $300 billion over the next two years – more than 10% above current levels. We suspended our debt ceiling. This week, we are preparing to pass our seventh short-term spending bill of the fiscal year. Our spending continues to soar with no end in sight.

"At this rate, I have no doubt that we will be ushering in a $22 trillion national debt by the new year. We promised voters that we would be fiscally responsible. This fiscal recklessness is bankrupting the country our grandchildren will inherit. What happened to our commitment of fiscal restraint? Where is our concern for the future of the nation we have been entrusted with? I beg my colleagues to cut spending and reduce our debt before we cross another trillion-dollar threshold."
