Congressman Biggs’ Statement on President Trump’s Continued Attention to Border Security

May 30, 2019

GILBERT, ARIZONA – Today, President Donald Trump announced that he would be making a dramatic statement on the next steps for border security. Congressman Biggs issued the following statement:

"I applaud President Trump for continuing to highlight the urgent need to secure our border and close the immigration loopholes that incentivize illegal entry into the United States. Our porous border is a national emergency, and I wish more members of Congress realized this fact half as well as President Trump. The consequences of the escalating crisis along our southern border affect countless communities across the nation; this must be addressed immediately.

"Last week, I, along with Congressmen Chip Roy and Michael Cloud, led a letter to Acting U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kevin McAleenan, outlining proposals to slow the surge at the border and provide context for long-term immigration proposals. These proposals include training Border Patrol agents to conduct credible fear interviews, limiting ICE parole policies, limiting work authorization, raising asylum fees, promulgating the ‘Flores' regulation, negotiating a safe third country agreement with Mexico in USMCA negotiations, and enforcing the migrant protection protocols. I hope Acting Secretary McAleenan enacts our proposals to help stem the tide of illegal immigration to protect Americans."
