President Trump Stands Up to Migrant Caravans and Enforces Immigration Laws

November 1, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Trump outlined the Administration's response to the immigration crisis at the southern border. Going forward, no migrant who enters the United States illegally, rather than entering legally through a port of entry, will be eligible for asylum. Additionally, any alien apprehended after crossing the border illegally will be detained until their immigration status is adjudicated. Congressman Biggs issued the following statement:

"I applaud President Trump's actions to fully enforce our nation's immigration laws and to show the world that illegal entry will not be tolerated or rewarded. The Obama Administration's use of catch-and-release policies, coupled with deficiencies in our asylum system, have allowed hundreds of thousands of aliens to gain legal entry to the United States even though they may not qualify.

"President Trump is well within the law to limit asylum to individuals entering the United States legally. However, it is time for Congress to get serious about securing the southern border and strengthening our immigration laws. I introduced the Fund and Complete the Border Wall Act, H.R.6657, to finish building a border wall and to provide much-needed assistance to our Border Patrol agents. I hope my colleagues in Congress will heed their oath to protect the United States and work with President Trump to close the loopholes in our immigration laws."
